The story
Before Tal moved to Bangkok, Thailand he hadn’t created a single video for social media. He started seeing a lot of different creators in Bangkok making videos about their experience in the city. He thought that he could add something to the space.
His first video was a review of the condo he had just moved to and it blew up receiving over 300,000 views. This ignited a flame and he started making videos every week about restaurants, night life and condo reviews. Over the next few months his views and followers steadily grew.
“I think one of the most import things when you start is consistency. People always quit before the start seeing results.” All of Tal’s videos didn’t pop off some of them only receiving a few hundred views. This can be extremely discharging but its important to create a process when starting and not worry so much if some dud videos don’t hit. Always keep iterating and improving your content.
The most important thing when starting is deciding if you want to create a business about it. If your goal is to make money you have to treat it like any other venture. The only person in the way of you creating is yourself and you have to set goals and processes to follow to ensure that you stay on track.
“I had to learn about rate cards” Every creator has whats called a rate card. This is equivalent to someones digital flyer. You should take time making it look professional because companies will reach out asking for your rate card. This is your pitch - they have seen your content and want to work but the rate card is one tool you use to close the deal. Your services and rates should be clearly defined so a prospect can review what your offerings are and it makes negotiations much easier.
“It took me about a year to make any money with social media” There is a lot of information out there how easy it is to make money with social media. These people are typically trying to sell you something like a course. But it really does take time - Tal took around 1 year to make any money with his content. He was making 3 videos a week to grow an audience and reached over 30k followers before his first deal.
“Social media is not for the fait of heart. Its not easy and takes a lot of work to get off the ground.”
The honest part
The catch
Social media can become a hamster wheel. There is a need to continue to create almost every day of the week. If you stop you are punished by the algorithm.
What failed first
Learning to be comfortable in front of the camera takes time. When I first started I was awkward and didn’t know how to speak clearly. When I look back at my old videos I cringe at how bad they are.
Would do differently
I would have started reaching out to companies sooner. I was paying for every meal at the beginning but there are plenty of companies that are willing to working with social media creators.
